Why don't we ride for another reason?
At the Bike Library, our mission is a simple one: we provide members of this community with bicycles, structured learning resources, and socially conscious programming. We know that any effort to offer socially conscious programming is not an end in itself; we see this programming as one of many steps in doing the work.
The idea for the Raise It Up Ride Series came together during the summer of 2020 when we asked: how can we use the power of the bicycle to advance racial equity, mobility justice, social justice, and anti-racism.
The whole initiative came together when Humanity in Action, the Multicultural Development Center of Iowa, and the City of Iowa City committed to collaborating with us. Together, our goal in creating the resources for this hybrid ride is to establish a force for education, celebration, reflection, and action. We want to celebrate Black history now(!), Black lives here, and the stories of this community as a whole.
Throughout this ride series, in everything we communicate, our intention is to be mindful of the communities we aim to serve, the stories of those we are sharing, and the experience of each rider.
We recognize that no story, history, dialogue, or experience can approximate anyone else's experience. And, regardless of our intentions, we understand that unintended impacts in the form of harmful language can occur. In other words, in our efforts to deliver socially conscious programs, we know that we will make mistakes. We will keep trying.
We promise to own our words and actions with compassion in service of the mission of the ride. We will commit to the movement for equity and liberation today and every day. We are asking riders to do the same.
As an audio-guided program, this ride asks riders to commit to participating actively in their own experience, to approach issues of equity as an act of reflection on an individual and systemic level. On their own, in small groups, or on volunteer-led rides, riders can use the route resources—map, ride guide, interactive apparatuses, and companion audio—set to be released in Sept.
We hope you will be as excited to take part in this series as we are to have you alongside us—riding for this reason. We invite you to raise it up by pre-registering below. Let's get to it!
