The Checkout Bike System

Book a Curbside Appointment

What IS a Checkout Bike?

What if I want to KEEP a Checkout Bike?

  • Bike has been refurbished by a staff or volunteer mechanic
  • Bike has been final checked and test ridden by a second staff or volunteer mechanic
  • Bike is READY to ride
  • Bike qualifies for the checkout program (i.e., you have the option to return it within six months for a return on your deposit minus the sustainability fee).
No sweat! Once the deposit is paid and the checkout form is signed, you have essentially "bought" the bike with the option of returning it within six months.

After six months, you simply forfeit the option to return the bike for a substantial return on your deposit (i.e., full deposit minus sustainability fee of $50 and damage fees, if any).

How do I Setup a Test Ride?

No matter which type of bike you're looking for, it all starts with making an appoint:
  1. First, you'll book a curbside appointment. Please start by providing information regarding your sizing and activity type via our appointment page so that a Bike Librarian can match you with curbside options.
  2. When you arrive for your appointment, please knock on the door. Checkout and High-end As-is test rides will be held at the front of the building; for basement shopping, please arrive at the rear.
  3. In order to practice safe social distancing, we ask that you stay at least 12 feet away from any other patrons that happen to show up in our parking lot as well as staff members when possible.
  4. Once you choose your preferred bike, a staff member will take a credit card number, and go over necessary bike checkout information. Staff will then print out a checkout bike form that will be placed on the table outside.
  5. Please sign the Checkout Bike form or As-is form and slip it into the plastic bag provided on the table outside.
  6. Once all forms are complete and payment has been processed, you can ride off on your new set of wheels!

Full Details on Checkout Bike Policy

Checkout bikes are available for test rides on a first-come, first-served basis by appointment only. We do not hold or guarantee a bike for checkout. We recommend that whoever plans to ride the bike is available for a test ride before checkout as sizing is key. During peak time our demand usually exceeds our supply.

Checkout bike deposit runs from $75 to $300, however the majority of our bikes are priced between $100-$200.

If you return the bike within six months, you will be refunded your deposit minus a $50 sustainability fee and any damages requiring replacement parts &/or extensive repair. The sustainability fee helps the Bike Library cover the expenses of normal bicycle wear and the overhead of running our shop.

During the six-month checkout period the Bike Library will assist you with adjustments and repairs, for minimal or no charge, depending on the circumstances. Ask a volunteer or email info@bikelibrary.org if you have questions.

If you keep the bike beyond six months, the Bike Library keeps your deposit, which helps us keep the lights on & the wrenches spinning.

Thank you for your interest in our curbside test riding service!
